Introduction
I was an elite runner in high school and college so my cycles had always been a bit wonky. Sometimes I had a period and sometimes I went months without one. Doctor’s suggested PCOS but never confirmed the diagnosis and didn’t give me much guidance for what that would mean for my fertility. Given my history and hormonal issues, I thought I might never be able to conceive. Thanks to hormone tracking with Mira, not only was I able to understand my cycle better, but we conceived in the very first month! Read on to hear my experience using this device and how it helped my husband and I get our timing right.
My history
Being an elite athlete for much of my life, I had never had a predictable or steady cycle. During my competitive days, my cycle was mostly absent and I was told I had PCOS. In my mind, that meant we might never conceive and I really didn’t know what to expect once my husband and I started trying to conceive.
Working with doctors about my infrequent cycles had never given me much hope. Other than a PCOS diagnosis, they didn’t offer much guidance and I felt like I was flying blind when it came to fertility. Months before officially trying I started to prepare for the challenge of getting pregnant. I had my IUD removed and began taking prenatals. I also saw a nutritionist to ensure my diet was supporting my fertility.
Using other fertility trackers
After my IUD was removed and my nutrition was sorted, I turned to ovulation strips to better understand when I was ovulating. I used another popular app to track my cycles and time our activities for the best chance at getting pregnant. According to the app and the ovulation strips we had our timing right and were having sex every day during my fertile window. After a two months of this I grew impatient and started looking for alternatives.
Given my lack of trust in doctors, I wanted a better understanding of ovulation and to confirm my PCOS diagnosis. I was doing all the right things but still not pregnant. I knew that we had only been trying for a short time but patience has never been one of my virtues. I decided to order Mira both for trying to conceive and to learn more about my cycle.
My device arrived just after my fertile window but I decided to start tracking anyway. The app showed my progesterone was elevated as well as my estrogen so I was pleased to know that I was actually ovulating. I had feared that with my athletic history and PCOS I may not even be ovulating so this was a huge relief. Ten days after ovulation (10 DPO) I took a pregnancy test to see a faint positive. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a chemical pregnancy as I watched my progesterone levels drop with hormone testing. Days later this was confirmed when I got my period. It wasn’t the end of the world though as just being able to confirm ovulation with Mira gave me so much hope and insight.
I called my doctor to keep her updated and she told me not to give up. Actually, she told me to “get on it” because, in her experience, many people successfully conceive the cycle following a chemical pregnancy. Once my cycle finished I immediately began monitoring with the Mira Max wands again. According to the other tracking app, I was set to ovulate on Day 18, but Mira told a different story. Based on my unique hormone data from Mira, I was expected to ovulate a whole 5 days earlier. My luteinizing hormone, the one that typically surges before ovulation, was climbing and we were able to time things perfectly thanks to the data provided by Mira.
Impatience won out again and at 10 DPO I tried a pregnancy test and got my Big Fat Positive! I continued testing for the next week and had strong positive results. After these results, I had a blood test and all levels looked strong. Without a doubt, I was pregnant!
Long story short, we used Mira at the tail end of a cycle and the results helped us recognize a chemical pregnancy and finally demystified my ovulation cycle. Within one month, one cycle really, of using Mira I was pregnant and had a better understanding of my fertility. Mira is truly a game changer when it comes to understanding your body, hormone levels, and ultimately your health.
A message to others
In today’s world of high stress, high chemicals, and high costs of living, fertility has changed in a matter of decades. Simply having mindless sex and hoping for the best isn’t always a realistic plan anymore.
There’s no one defined “natural” or “normal” path to parenthood anymore and millions of people are going through the exact same struggles to get pregnant or have a baby. Don’t be ashamed to speak out on your journey, ask for advice, share your fears, seek reassurance, or even share your failures. AS painful as that drop of blood is each month, know that it isn’t your fault. I firmly believe the universe has a plan for us all, so tap into a higher energy and soak up as much positivity as you can. Believe in that and believe in yourself, with a little help from Mira on the side!
